      Interlock Device Installation Process

      Once you’ve found a provider, the next step is making your car breathalyzer installation appointment. Choose a location nearby as you will be returning on a regular basis for calibration. This guide will explain each step of the IID installation process and answer any questions you may have. 

      How Long Does an Ignition Interlock Installation Take?

      If you have been court-ordered to install your ignition interlock device, An interlock installation must be performed by a state-approved interlock provider. With a state-approved provider, you can be sure your new device will meet state criteria, and you know it will be installed properly. ADS has more locations than any other provider, so you should be able to make an appointment at a convenient time for you. We recommend making an appointment so you have the shortest wait possible. Installation will take approximately one to two hours.

      What Happens During the Interlock Installation Process?

      At your installation appointment, the certified technician will install your device. This involves wiring it directly into your vehicle’s ignition. Once installed, they will test the device and show you how it works. They will ensure you can properly test using the device and start your car. The technician will also provide you with a certificate of installation, which you may need in order to get your driver’s license or restricted license. 

      Ignition Interlock Device Installation FAQs

      No. It is not recommended you install an interlock device yourself. There is a reason why car breathalyzer installation is done by a certified professional. IID installation is complicated, and installing your device incorrectly can damage your car. Additionally, your device must be installed by a certified ignition interlock device installation technician in order to meet state criteria. If you install it yourself, you will not meet state criteria and this could result in further penalties. These penalties might include a longer interlock term.

      The easiest way to have your ignition interlock device installed is to make an appointment with your selected provider. Bring everything you need to your car breathalyzer installation appointment. Some states require proof of ownership or a letter from the owner, or your court paperwork - check with your installation location. Making an appointment will prevent you from showing up to find the location doesn’t have your device on hand, or from a lengthy wait.

      With mobile IID installation, the certified technician will come to you. This option is not available in every state, but if your state offers it, you can make an appointment for mobile interlock installation. The technician will come to your home, install the device, and show you how it works before they leave. They will also provide you with a certificate of interlock installation.
